The Metabolic Problem: Healing the Body-Brain Chemistry

Many mood and brain disorders are metabolic problems that can be significantly improved and / or healed by nutrition and natural health protocols.

Many (almost all) enzymes for brain, blood and gut function require bio-available copper.

Key healing elements include: 1.) Stop all wheat / grains. 2.) SLOWLY start clean-nicotine 3.) Re-balance Iron-copper metabolism, 4.) Lots of Healthy Fats, 5.) Mineralization (FulvicAcid+MSM-Iodine-Boron-PearlPowder-Thiamine-Magnesium), 6.) Heavy metal detox, 7.) Emotional self-regulation such as EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique).

Why Start The Dr. Davis Wheat Belly Protocol?

Common Nutrient Deficiencies

Coconut Oil and Brain Function

Correcting foundational chemical imbalances with dietary changes can significantly improve and alleviate anxiety and depression disorders.

Sixty percent of the brain is composed of fat. Phospholipids (which contain about 50 percent saturated fats) help make up the brain cell membranes. ...Thus you nourish your brain cells when you eat saturated fats, and when you don't eat enough saturated fats, the chemistry of your brain may be compromised. [ Eat Fat, Lose Fat, page 45]

Brain Chemistry and Cholesterol

...Depression, irritability, mood swings, aggression, anger, memory loss, confusion, disorientation, and movement disorders are all documented effects of lowering cholesterol...keep in mind that everyone's cholesterol level is different...Forcing your cholesterol level down with drugs will only cause problems... [Stop Alzheimer's Now!, Bruce Fife, N.D., page 155]

Thiamine (Vitamin B1) and Brain Function

When someone is low in B1 they can no longer generate acetylcholine (neurotransmitter). So they can no longer maintain a healthy myelin sheath. So you develop symptoms which are similar to multiple sclerosis (MS). So you develop symptoms which are similar to an acetylcholine deficit....Acetylcholine is the primary chemical in what is known as the vagus nerve. The vagus nerve is the privary nerve in modulating the Rest & Digest (parasympathetic) nervous system....So when you lack acetylcholine you lose this balance between parasympathenic and sympathetic. There are lots of issues that stem from that. It can affect the GI tract, the heart, the rest of the nervous system. ~ Elliot Overton, CFMP EOnutrition.co.uk [More]

Magnesium and Metabolic Re-balancing

Medium and high dose magnesium. Eat high magnesium foods. Use a strong supplement (magnesium gycinate or magnesium malate are good options). WAPF article on Magnificent Magnesium. Epsom salt baths are a great way for the body to absorb a high volume of bio-available magnesium.

Anxiety, Brain Function and Glyphosate

Consider detoxing slowly from glyphosate. Glyphosate can cause toxic changes in brain and body chemistry and can amplify associated mood swings. More on glyphosate detox here.

Coconut Oil / Milk / Cream, Magnesium and Dietary Changes are More Effective Than Any Pharmaceutical

Six months of dietary coconut oil and/or coconut milk or cream therapy (including red palm oil and other healthy fats) is more effective to reduce anxiety and related 'neural-stress' problems than any refined pharmaceutical on the planet. Why? Although pharmaceuticals may temporarily suppress top-level anxiety symptoms, they add to the body's toxic burden and reduce overall stress hormone production, liver function and neural health. In the long run they create more problems than they solve.

If coconut does not agree with you, there are other options (including those below).

Adrenal stress hormones are built with healthy fats. The entire neural system needs good insulation to transmit well-regulated electric impulses (just like electric wires). The best insulation is provided by nature and is un-processed, un-refined, saturated fats like coconut oil and coconut milk. The amino acids and fat in coconut oil also provide strong liver support.

Start Slowly

Start with 1/2 to 1 teaspoon of coconut oil per day taken with food for the first 2-4 weeks. Some individuals are comfortable starting at 1 tablespoon per day with food. Test it out. Then slowly increase your consumption as you are comfortable.

This slow process gives your GI tract time to adjust and helps avoid undue digestive disturbance.

Coconut oil and coconut milk have strong healing qualities. They stimulate your body's natural ability to cleanse and rebuild. As your body removes toxins from your bloodstream, tissue and GI tract, you may feel sick temporarily. This is known as a healing crisis. In most cases this is only for a few hours or 1-2 days. If this happens, take less coconut oil or skip a few days and then take a smaller daily dose to give your body time to adjust.

Common symptoms can include temporary nausea, fatigue, vomiting, diarrhea, skin rashes, headaches, muscle aches, etc. After these pass and your body has flushed the toxins out of your system you feel much better. [Coconut Cures, Bruce Fife, N.D.]

The National Neurological Problem

The national health propaganda rejects healthy, natural fats that have kept traditional populations healthy for generations and instead promotes artificial, chemicalized, toxic fats.

Modern medicine, by demonizing healthy fats, has created a litany of mental health concerns. Eating healthy fats will not make you fat, nor will it make you sick. It will give your body the healing tools needed for full liver and blood detoxification, neural insulation and blood cell formation.

Coconut Oil and Liver Function

Open any biochemistry textbook and you will read that saturated fats protect the liver from toxins like alcohol and Tylenol. The tradition of eating butter or lard before a drinking bout is based on good science (although we do not recommend anything but very moderate alcohol consumption!). Today, as people shun saturated fats and eat more polyunsaturated oils [vegetable oils], liver problems have become more common. [Eat Fat, Lose Fat, page 45]

Coconut Oil and Heart Function

Saturated fats provide energy to the heart in times of stress. Studies have shown that saturated fats are the heart's preferred food, which is why there is a concentration of saturated fat in the tissues surrounding the heart. Moreover, two studies have shown that saturated fatty acids in the diet lower a substance in the blood called Lp(a), which (unlike cholesterol) is a good predictor of heart disease...And, as we saw in Chapter 2, heart disease is just as frequent in people with low cholesterol as in those with high cholesterol. Coconut Oil and Healing

Here is a brief overview of the ailments you can begin turning around by reintroducing healthy fats into your diet:

The following info is from this amazing resource on healthy fats: Eat Fat, Lose Fat: Three Delicious, Science Based Coconut Diets by Dr. Mary Enig, PhD and Sally Fallon, pages 14-15. Also, available on Amazon.com.

Anxiety: The combination of fatty acids and nutrients in coconut oil and cod-liver oil helps prevent low blood sugar and helps the body make the adrenal hormones it needs to deal with stress. Trans fats (eliminated in our program) inhibit the production of these hormones, so removing these from the diet is another big step toward relieving anxiety.

Viral Infections: The medium-chain fatty acids in coconut oil help kill the pathogenic lipid-coated viruses in the digestive tract.

Liver support: The combination of saturated fat in coconut oil, vitamin A in cod-liver oil and bone broths that give you special amino acids the liver uses to detoxify provides excellent support for liver function.

Insulin resistance: Trans fats interfere with insulin receptors in the cells. Replacing trans fats with coconut oil and other healthy fat is the number one step in preventing and reversing the insulin resistance so characteristic of type II diabetes.

Thyroid imbalance: Coconut oil alone improves thyroid function, but when used in conjunction with cod-liver oil, which supplies vitamin A (needed in high levels by the thyroid gland), the thyroid has the fats is needs to function properly.

Low energy: The medium-chain fatty acids in coconut oil give quick energy, prevent low blood sugar, and support the thyroid gland; plus, cod-liver oil provides nutrients vital for vitamin and mineral absorption.

Chronic fatigue: The medium-chain fatty acids in coconut oil provide energy and also fight pathogens in the digestive tract that contribute to fatigue.

Depression: The nutrients in cod-liver oil have a proven record of helping relieve depression, and the saturated fats in coconut oil work synergistically with cod-liver oil.

Mood swings: Plentiful fats in our diet help stabilize blood sugar swings that make your mood go up and down.

Hypoglycemia: Plenty of healthy fats at each meal help prevent drops in blood sugar.

More healthy fats: red and white palm oil, organic, (and raw) whole milk, cheese, cream, butter, ghee. Organic raw cultured yogurt, kefir. buttermilk. Organic eggs and avocado. Organic and pasture grazed meats, wild salmon and wild fish.
