A Deep Dive On Melatonin: functional significance for optimal cellular physiology, Russel J. Reiter, PhD, 2019, Professor of Cell Biology at UT San Antonio
6:20 minutes: Melatonin is found in bacteria and every organism between bacteria and human. And the structure is identical. Your melatonin is just like a bacterial melatonin. And it's non-toxic. It has no known toxicity at this point.
~ Russel J. Reiter, PhD
7:15 minutes: It's involved in the circadian rhythm...Melatonin is a strong anti-cancer agent. It influences the immune system, metabolism, the gastro-intestinal tract and especially the brain.
~ Russel J. Reiter, PhD
10:00 - 22:00 minutes: Circadian rhythm of melatonin in the blood and in the cerebrospinal fluid is of pineal origin...Every species that currently exists produces melatonin. Melatonin functions as an anti-oxidant in both plants and animals.

43:00 - 50:00 minutes: If you take melatonin orally (supplement) it is good for your mitochondria, in addition to the melatonin your mitochondria is producing...Only your pineal gland produces melatonin rhythmically, every one of your [other] cell produces it uniformly throughout a 24 hour period. 95% of your melatonin is NOT from your pineal gland, it is from all your other cells.

1:19 minutes. Dosages: IF you are going to take it, how much? When should you start? At what age? By the time you are 50 your melatonin levels are half of what they are in you young people [20s?]. So we think around the age of 45 maybe we should begin to supplement with melatonin. The purpose is to prevent and delay diseases. You don't want to get disease and have to take expensive treatment. You want to prevent... We have diabetic patients who take 1 gram (1000 milligrams) every day. I personally take 100 mg every day...Start at 3mg and gradually increase it as you grow older.
